Have you ever stopped and wondered… what is the Creator actually like? Not just what He does, but who is He. And what brings Him joy? What grieves His heart?
When I first started really reading Scripture for myself, I realized I had picked up a lot of different ideas about God’s character. Some people described Him as an angry judge just waiting for us to fail. Others made Him seem distant and a passive figure who didn’t care about right or wrong.
But the beautiful thing about Yehovah is that He does not leave us guessing. He actually reveals His heart to us in Scripture.
The Creator Reveals Who He Is
In Exodus, Moses asked to see Yehovah’s glory. And when Yehovah passed by him, He did something incredible. He not only revealed His power, but He also revealed His character. He spoke and showed Moses who He is:
Yehovah, Yehovah, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty…” — Exodus 34:6-7
Yehovah describe Himself as merciful and gracious, thats because He is compassionate towards us. He sees our weaknesses, our struggles, and our need for Him. His heart is slow to anger. He is patient with us, while giving us time to learn, grow, and turn back to Him when we wander.
He is also abounding in love and faithfulness. Love is not just something He does but it is part of who He is. His goodness does not run out, and His faithfulness does not fade away. He is also just. Because He is perfectly good, He cannot simply ignore evil, oppression, or wickedness. His justice ensures that wrong things will ultimately be made right.
He Is Holy (Kadosh)
“Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory!”
Isaiah 6:3
Another important part of understanding Yehovah’s character is the Hebrew word Kadosh, which means “holy” or “set apart.” He is completely unique, entirely pure, and separated from the darkness, deception, and chaos of this world. His ways are higher than ours, and His wisdom is greater than ours and His purity is so pure that not even a trace of impurity can withstand His presence.
What Does Yehovah Love?
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” — Micah 6:8
What He Loves: Scripture shows that He delights in righteousness, justice, humility, honesty, mercy, and when His children trust and obey His guidance and instructions.
What He Dislikes: Scripture shows He is against pride, deception, injustice, oppression of the weak, and hypocrisy. And those who are quick to run to evil.
Yehovah shows us His heart, and what He delights in and what He rejects. The more we understand what matters to Him, the more we can begin to align our own hearts with His. And walk in His truth.
He Never Changes
One of the most comforting truths I ever learned is the immutability of God, which is just a big word meaning He does not change. Many people mistakenly believe that the God of the Old Testament is mean and angry, while the God of the New Testament is suddenly loving and kind. But Malachi 3:6 says:
“For I, Yehovah, do not change.”
Malachi 3:6
He does not learn new information, He does not have mood swings, and He never alters His perfect standards. The exact same character He revealed to Moses at Mount Sinai is the exact same heart He has for you today. He is completely stable, entirely reliable, and the same yesterday, today, and forever.
